Daylight saving time officially starts this weekend in Alberta on Sunday, March 8, at 2 a.m. While your phones and computers will automatically “spring forward” one hour earlier, you’ll still have to check your smoke detectors.
So here are 5 tips to check your smoke detectors:
- Test alarms at least once a month by using the test alarm.
- For alarms with a removable battery’s, check the batteries every six months and change the batteries every year.
- Vacuum out any dust that may have accumulated in the detector.
- Install at least one smoke detector on every floor of the home, and in or near each sleeping area.
- Never paint a smoke detector, and do not install them near windows because a draft could interfere with the operation of the smoke detector.
