Roads
Roads are a priority for Athabasca County and each year the municipality directs resources towards the upkeep of existing roads, improving others and clearing snow from them in the winter. Our focus is safety and because we have over 2,400 kilometres of roads to maintain we have to prioritize all needed work with projects from all over the County big and small.
Programs & Services
Dust Control Programs
Cost-Shared Dust Control Program
Each year County Council approves a Cost-Shared Dust Control Program for properties adjacent to graveled County roads.
Residents may apply to have a spot treatment of dust suppressant applied on the County road in front of their residence approximately 200 meters in length.
Fees to participate
The 2023 fee to participate in the program is $420 ($400 + GST). The fee is based on costs from the product supplier and can vary from year to year. No guarantee is implied with regards to the effectiveness of the dust control and the County reserves the right to grade the road if surface conditions require it. The County reserves the right to refuse an application if it is deemed that the roadway has sufficient residual dust control product from previous years.
Who is eligible
Both rural residences and businesses can apply:
- Rural properties/residences must have a permanent dwelling on them;
- Eligible businesses must be adjacent to the roadway and be regularly occupied by employees and/or customers.
If you are not eligible for the cost-shared program, or would like to request a length outside of the standard 200 meters, contact the Infrastructure Services Department: 780-675-2273 | 1-844-662-2273 | info@athabascacounty.com
Application Deadline
Due to scheduling timelines, all applications and payments must be received in our office prior to the deadline each year in order to be eligible for this program.
Applications received after the deadline may be accepted, however an additional fee of $250 will be added to the regular rate. All late applications will be reviewed to determine scheduling. The County has the right to refuse applications after the deadline.
The application deadline is April 5, 2023.

Residential Snowplowing
The Public Works Department offers snowplowing of private residential driveways.
Athabasca County uses a snowplow flag system to indicate when driveway clearing is requested. A Residential Snowplowing Hold Harmless Agreement must be signed by the landowner before flags can be purchased.
The snowplow flags are good for one (1) driveway plowing and fees are as follows:
- Standard $75.00 + GST
- Senior $25.00 + GST
This service shall be undertaken at the discretion of the County and only after public roads have been fully cleared of snow.
Property owners are responsible for informing renters/purchasers/potential purchasers of any Residential Snowplowing Agreements that are in place.
An inspection of the driveway may be required to identify hazards for the grader in order to prevent damage to the driveway and County equipment.
Athabasca County reserves the right to refuse clearing of a private driveway should the conditions not suit the safe removal of snow by the operator.
Weekly Grading Reports
These reports show our grader operator’s routes when performing gravel road maintenance throughout the county. Please note that the maps may not always reflect the actual activity in specific areas due to equipment substitution when a grader is in the shop for service.
