Roads
Roads are a priority for Athabasca County and each year the municipality directs resources towards the upkeep of existing roads, improving others and clearing snow from them in the winter. Our focus is safety and because we have over 2,400 kilometres of roads to maintain we have to prioritize all needed work with projects from all over the County big and small.
Programs & Services
Dust Control Programs
Cost-Shared Dust Control Program
Applications are now closed for the 2024 Season
Council has approved a new Cost Shared Dust Control Policy, which approves a 50/50 Cost-Shared Dust Control Program for residential properties adjacent to graveled County roads.
Residents may apply to have a spot treatment of dust suppressant applied on the County road in front of their residence for 200 meters in length.
Fees to participate
The 2024 fee to participate in the program is $200 (+$10 GST). The fee is based on costs from the product supplier and can vary from year to year. No guarantee is implied with regards to the effectiveness of the dust control and the County reserves the right to grade the road if surface conditions require it. The County reserves the right to refuse an application if it is deemed that the roadway has sufficient residual dust control product from previous years.
Who is eligible
Both rural residences and businesses can apply:
- Rural properties/residences must have a permanent dwelling on them;
- Eligible businesses must be adjacent to the roadway and be regularly occupied by employees and/or customers.
Exception: Residents who live on the corner of a Township and Range Road are eligible for two (2) 200-meter 50/50 cost shared dust control with 200 meters placed on each of the township and range road.
There will be no sale of extra dust control product beyond the 200 meters.
Application Deadline
Due to scheduling timelines, all applications and payments must be received in our office prior to the deadline each year in order to be eligible for this program.
Applications received after the deadline may be accepted, however an additional fee of $250 will be added to the regular rate. All late applications will be reviewed to determine scheduling. The County has the right to refuse applications after the deadline.
The application deadline is April 5, 2024.

Residential Snowplowing
With the approval of Policy 3201 Athabasca County has amended their rural driveway snow clearing.
Rural Athabasca County residents (not in hamlets or condominiums) who wish to have their snow cleared from their private lane/driveway can submit an application to the County. A Laneway/Driveway means a rural driveway not in a residential hamlet or lake subdivision. Residences in these locations do not qualify for this program.
Applications must be approved by the Manager of Public Works or designate after an inspection for safety of equipment and County workers. A hold harmless agreement must be signed annually by the owner (and applicant) in the case of renters.
Applications are good for one (1) winter season and covers snow clearing for the entirety of the season. A fee of $200.00 + applicable taxes must be paid upon application.
Municipal Roads are priority for snowplowing and private lanes / driveways will be managed as per administrative capacity and based on snow accumulation with each snowfall event
Driveways will not be given higher priority by an applicant phoning in to Athabasca County.
Property owners are responsible for informing renters/purchasers/potential purchasers of any Residential Snowplowing Agreements that are in place.
All lanes/driveways must be freely accessible to be eligible for driveway clearing services. Gates must be left open and will not be closed by County staff.
This program is only open to properties that fall into areas where Athabasca County has jurisdiction or authority to plow. As such, this program is not available to Summer Villages within the County.
Residents who previously purchased flags for the program can return them to the County office for a refund.
Athabasca County reserves the right to refuse clearing of a private driveway that are deemed hazardous.
