County Fire Crews Containing Wildfire Near Jackfish Lake

On the afternoon of Wednesday May 3rd Athabasca County fire crews were dispatched to a fire north of Township 670 and east of Jackfish Lake.

As of the morning of Thursday May 4th the fire has burnt approximately 100 hectares in size. The fire is being held by fire crews on the east of the Jackfish Lake area. Crews are trying to contain the fire as it runs north towards the river. As a precaution, the Jackfish Lake Campground is temporarily closed until further notice.

Both County crews and Alberta Forestry are on site fighting the fire.

The fire crews from the Athabasca, Colinton and Boyle stations were containing the fire until the late hours of the previous night.

Two helicopters are on scene for Thursday May 4th and will be bucketing the fire throughout the day.

Crews are hopeful that the fire will be contained today and will be held from there.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation. Athabasca County would like to thank the County crews and volunteer firefighters for the work the hard work that they do.
