Athabasca County Wildfire Update – April 14 2024

UPDATE April 16th 3:20pm: As of 10:00am on April 16th the fire has been declared under control. Mop-up crews consisting of County public works staff and volunteer firefighters will remain on scene putting out ground fires and hot spots.

 

Athabasca County Wildfire Update

 

At approximately 12:15 pm on Sunday April 14th, County fire crews were alerted to a wildfire near Canoe Lake in Athabasca County, which is about 4 miles east of the Hamlet of Colinton, and about 8 miles southeast of the Town of Athabasca.

The fire grew in size to approximately 135.5ha with winds from the Southwest.  A number of fire departments in the region assisted with the fire along with local residents.  Some farm structures and outbuildings were lost but no homes were lost due to efforts of fire crews. As the result of fire suppression activities, one firefighter received a minor injury while working on the fire the night of Sunday April 14th. They were assessed by EMS on-scene and returned to work.

As of 10:00am on April 16th, the fire is declared as “Under Control”. Under current and forecast conditions, the fire is not expected to increase. Ground fire and hot spots continue throughout the area due to the dry conditions and steady winds. Mop-up crews consisting of County public works staff and volunteer firefighters will remain on scene putting out ground fires and hot spots, which is expected to take the remainder of the week. Smoke will continue to be visible in the area.
