Athabasca County is pleased and excited to announce that Mr. Travis Shalapay has been hired as the Regional Fire Chief for Athabasca County effective July 24th, 2023.
Mr. Shalapay has 15 years of progressive leadership experience in both municipal and industrial settings. Mr. Shalapay brings to the County over 20 years of volunteer firefighter experience with the Town of Athabasca, where he has been the Town’s Fire Chief since 2016.
The Regional Fire Chief works collaboratively with district fire chiefs and administration to optimize County fire services, fire prevention, recruitment, training, project management and the procurement and distribution of goods and services necessary to support fire and rescue operations that are occurring within the County.
Mr. Shalapay will be taking over from Steve Hamilton, who has been Athabasca County’s Interim Regional Fire Chief since May 2023.
Athabasca County is confident that Mr. Shalapay’s many years of experience and leadership in the region will allow them to be successful and help lead the Athabasca County Fire Services forward.
