Many household products are labelled and marketed as DISPOSABLE and/or FLUSHABLE; many baby and adult personal hygiene products, along with household wipes and cleaning towelettes are labelled both disposable and flushable. While these products may be marketed as a convenience item in this way, the truth is that these types of items have the ability to clog and stop up not only the sewer line on your property but also can cause blockage and service problems in the public sewer system.
Unlike toilet paper, these products DO NOT break down once they are flushed.
DO NOT flush the listed items; place them in the trash, not the toilet.
- ANY wipes, such as disinfectant, hand or baby wipes
- Paper Towels
- Feminine hygiene products
- Cotton swabs
- Disposable diapers
- Dental floss
- Dish cloths/towels
- Articles of clothing
- Batteries
Fats, oils, and grease (FOG’s) are an issue as well. It is important to inspect and clean grease traps regularly, wipe off dishes before washing and catch/recycle FOG’s rather than letting it down the drain.
These items also go for outhouses, as all sewer waste ends up in our lagoons and creates a negative affect on our systems as well as the environment.
