Tree Seedling Sale 2023

 

Athabasca County is offering tree seedlings on a pre-order and pre-pay basis to be delivered in May 2023. There are 16 species of trees being offered to residents of Athabasca County. The quantities and prices per bundle vary so please consult the order form to confirm this information. 

Order Details

  • Only residents of Athabasca County can place an order for trees as part of this program.
  • Payment is due when the order is placed. Payment by credit card is strongly recommended due to the pandemic.
  • Trees will not be held and are sold in bundles of either 4 or 5 as indicated, no exceptions.
  • To avoid disappointment, order early as some varieties have limited numbers available.

  • Native to the North Dakota region
  • Cold tolerant
  • Compared to other spruce species it is more compact, dense, and has a conical form. This makes it more suitable for smaller spaces
  • Max height: 25m (82ft), spread 4m (12ft)
  • Seedling size: 14-35cm

  • A very hardy tree
  • Makes a good shelterbelt tree as well as an accent tree
  • Has distinctive orange, flaky bark
  • Prefers dryer soil, will not tolerate undrained sites
  • Max height: 15m (49ft), spread 5m (15ft)
  • Seedling size: 8-25cm

Description: 

  • Unique tree with needles that turn yellow and fall for winter
  • Is tolerant of poorly drained soils
  • Has a very long lifespan (over 100 years)

  • Its unique umbrella canopy shape makes it a nice accent tree

  • A great tree for wildlife planting that is also an attractive ornamental yard tree

  • Leaves turn brilliant red in the fall
  • Can tolerate both dry and wet conditions, is a very hardy tree

  • Slow growing but once established are one of the best shelterbelt trees available
  • Salt intolerant, be wary of planting near roads!
  • Make great accent trees

  • Haskaps are a very adaptable and extremely cold hardy
  • Thornless, low maintenance, produce fruit very quickly
  • Berry taste is tart/sweet
  • Are tolerant to most soil types and moisture levels (they are drought tolerant) but avoid planting in places where standing water can occur
  • Haskaps need a pollinator for berry production. The Honeybee variety pollinates the Boreal Blizzard. Plant them in close proximity to each other, ideally side by side
  • Boreal Blizzard has the biggest berry size of all haskap varieties
  • Height: 2.4 m (8 ft), spread: 1.5 m (5 ft)
  • Seedling size: 12-38cm

  • Developed in Manitoba, this raspberry is the most robust and cold hardy of all the varieties
  • This variety is know for the sweetness of its berries
  • Best grown in organically rich, well drained soils

  • Drought tolerant. Can handle a variety of soil types and moisture levels
  • This hybrid is disease resistant, unlike some other columnar deciduous trees

There has been a lot of discussion around the declining number of pollinators and the factors contributing to that loss. It has brought awareness to the ecological services pollinators provide us with and has shown us how much the agriculture and food industry relies on theses insects. We can take action to help pollinators, and we can promote native plant biodiversity at the same time!

  • These seedlings start out small and if vegetation is not controlled around where they are planted grass and weeds outcompete them for sunlight and moisture, leading to tree death or poor growth

TREE DESCRIPTIONS

Picking Up Your Order

The pick-up date for the tree seedlings will be communicated with you as early as possible. Please make every effort to pick up your trees that day as staff will not be responsible for looking after them after the distribution day has passed and tree health may suffer because of that.

Alternate arrangements for relatives, friends or neighbours to pick up your trees is encouraged if you cannot pick up on the designated day. Tree orders not picked up three business days after distribution day may be dispersed at Athabasca County’s discretion if no alternate arrangements are made ahead of time and no refunds will be given.

Please Note: Trees are inspected during packaging to ensure they are alive and in excellent condition. Once they leave our care we cannot attest to what level of upkeep they are given, therefore no refunds will be given on any tree orders after tree distribution day.
