Residential Snowplowing

With the approval of Policy 3201 Athabasca County has amended their rural driveway snow clearing.

Rural Athabasca County residents (not in hamlets or condominiums) who wish to have their snow cleared from their private lane/driveway can submit an application to the County. A Laneway/Driveway means a rural driveway not in a residential hamlet or lake subdivision. Residences in these locations do not qualify for this program.

Applications must be approved by the Manager of Public Works or designate after an inspection for safety of equipment and County workers. A hold harmless agreement must be signed annually by the owner (and applicant) in the case of renters.

Applications are good for one (1) winter season and covers snow clearing for the entirety of the season. A fee of $200.00 + applicable taxes must be paid upon application.

Municipal Roads are priority for snowplowing and private lanes / driveways will be managed as per administrative capacity and based on snow accumulation with each snowfall event

Driveways will not be given higher priority by an applicant phoning in to Athabasca County.

  • Property owners are responsible for informing renters/purchasers/potential purchasers of any Residential Snowplowing Agreements that are in place.
  • All lanes/driveways must be freely accessible to be eligible for driveway clearing services. Gates must be left open and will not be closed by County staff.
  • This program is only open to properties that fall into areas where Athabasca County has jurisdiction or authority to plow. As such, this program is not available to Summer Villages within the County.
  • Residents who previously purchased flags for the program can return them to the County office for a refund.
  • Athabasca County reserves the right to refuse clearing of a private driveway that are deemed hazardous.
