A Fire Control Order has been issued by the Forestry Division, Alberta Agriculture and Foresty enforcing a province wide FIRE BAN according to section 21 of the Forest and Prairie Protection Act. It was brought into effect as of 4:30 pm on May 5, 2016.
The Order suspends all fire permits issued under the Act, requires all outdoor fires presently burning, whether set under the authority of a fire permit or not, extinguished, and Prohibits the lighting of all outdoor fires on all land, including privately owned land, within the Province of Alberta except for land within the boundaries of any city, town or village (including a summer village).

The Order does not apply to:
- portable propane fire pits that are CSA approved or UL certified, within campgrounds, backcountry and random camping areas
- Gas or propane stoves and barbecues, that are CSA approved or UL certified and are designed for cooking or heating, withing campgrounds, backcountry and random camping areas
- fires contained in industrial facilities or on industrial sites as approved by a forest officer
- catalytic or infrared style heaters, withing campgrounds, backcountry and random camping areas
