September 5, 2012- We’d like to give a warm welcome to some Central American visitors.
A delegation from the municipality of Somoto, in Nicaragua, arrived in Athabasca this week for the fourth exchange between our municipalities, part of the Federation of Canadian Municipalities’ (FCM) economic development exchange program.
Athabasca County officials have visited their municipality twice over the past year, before and after they visited Alberta in December.
During this trip, they’ll continue to work on economic development as well as the program’s main project, an effort to convert waste paper into cooking briquettes. The project is designed to provide local jobs and cut back on deforestation.
The project’s initial success has even caught the eye of Nicaragua’s FCM counterpart, who have discussed implementing it on a national scale.
