Information for Voters

New for 2025: With the proclamation of the Municipal Affairs Statutes Amendment Act, 2024 municipalities are required to maintain a Permanent Electors Register of residents who are eligible to vote. Any individual who wishes to vote on Election Day must first be registered.

Advance Polling

Ready to vote before Election Day? You can vote on advance polling days this Thursday October 9, 2025, and Friday October 17, 2025 between the hours of 12:00pm to 7:00pm.

In order to vote, you must produce for inspection one or more of the acceptable forms of identification required by section 53 of the Local Authorities Election Act.

Information for Voters

To vote in the 2025 municipal election in Athabasca County, you must be:

  • At least 18 years of age;
  • A Canadian Citizen;
  • Resides in Alberta and the person’s place of residence is located in the local jurisdiction on election day. (October 20, 2025)
  • Not otherwise ineligible or disqualified under the Local Authorities Election Act 

Voter Identification

At the voting station, voters MUST provide identification that proves your identity and current residence. Any of the following documents with the voter’s name and address will be accepted:

  • Identification issued by a Canadian government or agency of that government that contains a photograph of the elector and their name and current address.
  • Bank or credit card statement or personal cheque.
    Government cheque or cheque stub.
  • Income or property tax assessment notice.
  • Insurance policy or coverage card.
  • Letter from a public curator, public guardian or public trustee.
  • Pension plan statement of benefits, contributions or participation.
  • Residential lease or mortgage statement.
  • Statement of government benefits (e.g., employee insurance, old-age security, social assistance, disability support, child tax benefit).
  • Utility bill (e.g., telephone, hydro, gas or water).
  • Vehicle ownership, registration or insurance certificate.

 

If a voter’s identification shows a post office box number as the address instead of a residential or legal address, it can be accepted as verification of their current address if it is a reasonable distance to the voting jurisdiction.

Special Ballots

A special ballot is available for electors who are registered to vote and listed on the Permanent Electors Register and are unable to vote at an advance vote or at the voting station on Election Day.

You can request a special ballot by completing the Form 22 – Request for Special Ballot and returning it to the Returning Officer. Requests for special ballots are accepted until 12 noon on October 6th.

Special ballot packages will be mailed to eligible applicants after Nomination Day (September 22, 2025) or the Returning Officer will hold it for pick-up for the elector. Step-by-step instructions will be included in the special ballot package.

Eligible voters must submit the completed special ballot package to the Returning Officer no later than 4:00 p.m. on Monday, October 20, 2025 (Election Day).

Any special ballot packages that are incorrect or incomplete, or received after 4:00 p.m. on Monday, October 20, 2025, will not be accepted or counted.


Instructions for Voters not Registered or on the Permanent Electors Register

Voters who have not registered and are not on the Permanent Electors Register can still apply for a special ballot package, however, must first apply to be added to the Permanent Electors Register by providing the following:

Email all completed documents or deliver them in-person to the address listed above.

Once added to the Permanent Electors Register, voters will need to apply for a special ballot by completing another Form 22.

Please note that special ballot packages will not be issued for Divisions where there is an acclamation.

Attestation

Voters who do not have identification that proves their identity and current residence, can complete the following Attestation Forms to Vote.

Attestation Forms are authorized to be used as a form of identification in the following circumstances:

  • An elector who resides on a colony,
  • An elector who is renting their ordinary residence.

To use an Attestation Form as ID, the elector will:

  1. Download and print the applicable form from the table below.
  2. Complete section 1 of the form, which includes name, address, and signature fields,
  3. Contact one of the authorized signatories, as identified in the table below and provide them with the form. The authorized signatory will complete section 2 of the form.
  4. Bring the original completed form to the voting place and present it to the voting station. The Deputy Returning Officer will retain the Attestation Form.

The attestation process is completed before attending a voting place. The authorized signatory does not need to attend the voting place with the elector.
