Members of Athabasca County Council attend a variety of local meetings, public events and conferences where they have the opportunity to speak directly with elected officials in the region and at the provincial level. Members of Council are appointed to various boards and committees at the Annual Organizational Meeting each October. In addition to regular council meetings, Councillors attend committee meetings, in some cases alongside elected officials from other municipalities and public members at large. Regular updates on the activity within the committees and commissions are given at Regular Council Meetings and can be viewed by reading meeting minutes.
Councillor expenses and timesheets are available for public review. In December of 2024, Council’s remuneration was amended by Policy 2009 and each Councillor now receives an honorarium and expense claims are submitted for travel. Council Highlights are a way for residents and businesses to keep up with discussions that take place at Regular Council Meetings twice per month.

Each year a budget highlights document is sent out with the tax notices to explain what the priorities are for the budget year. Each year Athabasca County engages the services of an independent auditor to review the financial position of the municipality and create audited financial statements which are made available to the public. They include and Independent Auditors’ Report and Statement of Financial Position and are presented to Athabasca County Council for review each year. During each elected term, Athabasca County Council gathers with their senior managers to determine the best way to meet the needs of County residents now and into the future. To that end, in November 2022, Council and Administration met to develop the strategic plan which can be read below. The Plan is made up of Council’s expressed goals for the County and provides County citizens, businesses, organizations, and other community stakeholders with an indication of a bright future for Athabasca County.
