Athabasca RCMP to Launch Operation Cold Start Campaign to Help Prevent Vehicle Theft

Athabasca County has been notified of the following:

Athabasca RCMP is set to launch Operation Cold Start, an initiative aimed at reducing the theft of idling vehicles and protecting personal belongings. This annual campaign focuses on preventing crimes of opportunity that occur when vehicles are left running, unlocked, and unattended.

Operation Cold Start will run from February 1st to February 7th, with officers from the Athabasca RCMP performing enforcement and educational efforts to help keep vehicles safe.

Last year during Operation Cold Start, Alberta RCMP and its law enforcement partners found 442 vehicles unlocked and idling with keys inside. Not only do vehicle thefts increase the cost of insurance, but the stolen vehicles can also be used for further crime, or even be put back on the market and sold to unsuspecting Albertans.
