2026 marks the 150th anniversary of the Athabasca Landing Trail.
In 1876, the Hudson’s Bay Company completed the historic Athabasca Landing Trail—known as the “100 Mile Portage”—connecting Fort Edmonton with the Athabasca River. For decades, freighters, Métis mail carriers, settlers, missionaries and gold seekers followed the trail north. Today, the route continues as a non-motorized recreational trail and part of the Trans Canada Trail, inviting a new generation to explore the landscape and discover the history beneath their feet.
In celebration of this anniversary, we encourage residents and visitors to explore the trail and take two photos of trail sites in Athabasca County for a chance to win a prize! Email your photos by October 21, 2026 to KChamzuk@athabascacounty.com & THolland@athabascacounty.com to enter.
