Recruitment for a permanent CAO is underway
Athabasca, AB – County Council is pleased to announce that Mr. Paul Benedetto has been selected as Interim Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) while recruitment for a permanent CAO is underway. Council made the appointment during the County Council meeting on July 23, 2026.
“On behalf of County Council, we’re excited to welcome Paul and look forward to working with him,” Reeve Tracy Holland says. “He has a proven ability to build strong communities through meaningful engagement with residents, businesses, and regional partners.”
Mr. Benedetto brings to Athabasca County more than 40 years of leadership experience in both urban and rural municipalities. His extensive career includes serving as CAO with the City of Leduc, City of Fort Saskatchewan, Thorhild County, and the Town of Millet. He has also served as Interim CAO at Woodlands County and the Town of Devon, giving him a strong understanding of the unique opportunities and diverse challenges facing communities.
Over the course of his career, Mr. Benedetto has been recognized for his dedication and achievements in chief administrative management, community and organizational development, and involvement in developing industrial, emergency, and staff education programs.
Some of the key areas where his experience will benefit the community include:
- Strategic oversight of capital infrastructure projects
- Enhancing programs and policies to support effective municipal services
- Maintaining and strengthening strategic relationships with provincial and federal governments and regional partners

Mr. Benedetto’s official start date at Athabasca County is July 28, 2026. A third-party service provider will begin conducting a search for a permanent CAO position.
